China, I know right?!? Crazy, I never thought I would've gone there once, let alone twice in a year! However, this mission will be in the southern region of China, Wenshan (Yunnan Province). In August 2011, I traveled to Kashgar, which is on the far western borders of China. I received the email on my birthday (and who says Friday the 13th is unlucky) and immediately was thrilled to go on this mission. I responded back with my confirmation and recently learned another pre/post nurse on the mission is also from Salt Lake City and she works at Primary Children's as well! I'm thrilled to have a traveling buddy this trip! The mission dates are March 13-22, but I am planning with this fellow nurse to stay til possibly the night of the 23rd to see Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. I was able to see the Great Wall on my last visit but won't be apposed to spending more time at the once in a lifetime, twice for me, wonder of the world!
Rice fields in Yunnan Province. I hope to be able to see some of these. Yunnan Province is more mountainous, which in comparison to Kashgar was desert.

Touring KSL 5!
Lizzy Johnson, a friend in my YSA ward, hooked us up with a tour of her work, KSL 5! I enjoy reading KSL.com and watching them live on TV if I have time. It was very interesting to see how everything works and what goes on behind the stories of the day. We were able to play on the green screen and predict the weather! I think I have a new career!

Costa Concordia sinks off Tuscan Coast, 1.13.12
On January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia struck a rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea just off the shore of Isola del Giglio, near the western coast of Italy. This tore a 160 ft long gash in her hull, and she eventually capsized in shallow water in the Tyrrhenian Sea just off the shore of Isola del Giglio, near the western coast of Italy. Most of the 3,229 passengers and 1,023 crew were saved; as of 26 January 2012 (2012 -01-26)[update] the bodies of eleven named passengers, two crew members, and three unidentified people had been found, and the search continued, with sixteen people known to be missing
Friday the 13th isn't a lucky day for everyone and it especially wasn't for the 4,200 passengers aboard the Costa Concordia Cruise liner which had just set sail out of Tuscany, Italy. The above diagram shows the final hours of the ship. CNN has reported the Captain brought the course of the ship too close to land, thus causing the ship to hit rocks and eventually keel over on it's side.
The similar disaster of the Titanic in 1912 has always been interesting to me. How did it happen? What could've been done differently? I own a few books on the Titanic and I have loved reading first hand accounts. Honestly, the emotional drama of it gets me as well, thus why when I heard about the Costa Concordia, I was immediatley drawn in. Thus far, 17 people have been found dead and 16 are still missing inside the half sunken ship. Rescue divers have searched everyday, yet at times the search is called off due to movememts of the ship. The ship lies on shallow rocks, and if it keeps moving, it could sink farther into the ocean.
Below are some survivors accounts taken from CNN.com...

The Costa Concordia, $450 million, was the largest Italian luxery cruise liner of its kind.Photos of the Concordia as it begins to tilt, lifeboats leave the ship for land
The Costa Concordia shown with many lifeboats leaving the ship for Giglio Island. Many people jumped into the water and swam because they found it easier to escape the sinking ship than waiting for a lifeboat.A picture of passengers on the side of the ship making their way down a rope ladder to be rescued.
As day approached and the rescue efforts continued, the disaster become apparent with one look at the hull with a rock remaining.
Rescuers in awe at the size of the rock left in the hull of the Costa Concordia. It's crazy!

If you've been on a cruise, you know the magnitude of the size of these vessels. I still can't get over the fact that a ship that big is mostly under water.
A picture taken from underwater with the ship's bell. You can read the enscription, "Costa Concordia 2006". It's so sad.

A birthday hike up to a snowless...yet frozen, Donut Falls!
I celebrated my 27th birthday outdoors! My favorite place to be! My friend Noelle Sanchez, whom I work with at the hospital, also had the day off and joined me, which I was very grateful for. We decided to not snow shoe, but hike, since Utah has had one of the driest winters on record. As we neared the falls, we found the hike up them to be icee! We had to carefully cross ice bridges, climb around and up boulders to get to the cave.
Noelle crossing one of the ice bridges. We could hear the water running underneath and in some places see the water through the ice, which was really cool!
Donut Falls, in its frozen glory!
Noelle is debating which way we can climb up. I told her I'd rather not die on my birthday. We had quite the adventure! That huge slab of ice had running water underneath it, it's so interesting!
In front of the entrance to the cave, where the falls fall through a hole in the top of the cave, hence...Donut Falls! On the way down, we found it easier to slide down the icee areas!
Noelle inside the cave.
Noelle acting as if she discovered the cave!
The beautiful scenery we were blessed to enjoy!
No snow! Come on, we need it! I had such a great time with Noelle hiking/sliding Donut Falls! Afterwards, we treated our cooler bodies to warm bowls of tomato basil soup at Zupas! One of my favorite restaurants. Then I headed home to prepare for the Superstitious Party! I had black cats to cut out, a ladder to borrow from the neighbors, umbrellas to open inside the house, and pennies to lay around the house upside down. I love Friday the 13th, especially in January!

Happy Birthday to Me!
This year my birthday is falling on a Friday! Whooot, whooot, Friday the 13th! My roommates and I are hosting a superstitious birthday party, complete with a ladder to walk under, a black cat, tail sided pennies, a broken mirror, and opened umbrellas in the house! It's a good thing I'm not too superstitious! It will be a fun, great day! 27, harmless...right? I sure hope so! I feel this is going to be a really good year!
